ONVIF

ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is a global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products. Founded in 2008 by Axis Communications, Bosch Security Systems, and Sony, ONVIF provides and promotes standardized interfaces for effective interoperability of IP-based physical security products.

ONVIF creates profiles that define specific feature sets for devices and clients, ensuring that products from different manufacturers can work together. Key profiles include Profile S (video streaming), Profile T (advanced video streaming with analytics metadata), Profile G (video recording and storage), Profile M (metadata and events for analytics), Profile A (access control), and Profile C (door/gate control).

With over 500 member companies worldwide, ONVIF conformant products represent the vast majority of the network physical security market. The standard is critical for integrators and end users who want flexibility to mix and match cameras, VMS platforms, and analytics from different vendors without compatibility concerns.

ONVIF also offers a comprehensive online course for security professionals to understand and leverage the standard in their projects. The organization regularly updates its profiles to address emerging technologies and use cases in video surveillance, access control, and IoT integration.
